Originally catalogued as Death, this work by the German artist Kathe Kollwitz (1867-1945) is titled 'Vergewaltigte bauersfrau' (Raped Boer Woman) and was drawn by the artist in 1907. Kollwitz's drawings greatly focus on the atrocities of war, living through several wars where she lost both her son and husband. The work shows a child looking over the garden fence into a cabbage patch where the body of a woman lies. The work was donated by the artist club with an exhibition of Modern German Graphic Artists in the MacFadyen Memorial Hall held at the University of Pretoria on 11 May 1935, together with works of fellow German artists such as Max Pechstein, Wilhelm Kuhnert and Lovis Corinth.
