A great eagle swoops with spread wings on a fox and harpoons its body with its sharp talons. The fox writhes in an extreme attempt at defense and opens its jaws in a cry. The face of the bird, which occupies the center of the table, appears absolutely imperturbable in the face of the pain of its prey. Ligabue loves to represent the inescapable laws of nature by which even a ferocious predator like the fox can in turn become prey. The work is done with great care and skill. Behind the eagle's wings, rendered with painstaking detail, a wide plain opens up with a village in the background. The blue sky is lit by the orange of the setting sun.
