  • About Creator: Marcelo Soares (Olinda, PE, 1953) is a graphic artist, painter, poet, editor and art educator. In 1974, he started engraving, making covers for cordel leaflets, encouraged by his father, José Soares, (1914-1981), a renowned cordelist, known as O Poeta Repórter. He expands his activities, foraying into drawing and painting, creating covers and illustrations for books, records, posters. He is the author of dozens of cordel leaflets, illustrated works by hundreds of popular poets, worked for several publishers and newspapers. In Rio de Janeiro, he took a woodcut course at the Parque Lage School of Visual Arts as a scholarship student (1983), taught at the Escolinha de Arte do Brasil (1984-1985) and worked, by invitation, in the studio of Augusto Rodrigues (1986-1991). Back in Pernambuco, he was Director of Culture of Timbaúba (1992-1996), in 1997 founded Folhetaria Cordel and published Estes fesceninos [These Fescennines]; worked with Ariano Suassuna (1994-1998) at the State Secretariat of Culture and in 2003 published Outros fesceninos [Other Fescennines]. He has been teaching woodcut workshops in several cities in Brazil and abroad. He lives in João Pessoa (PB) since 2013.
