The dreidel, also called the Hanukkah spinning top, was as a children’s toy. It allowed the players to win more chocolate coins, which Jewish children used to receive on Hanukkah from their parents. The spinning top has an octagonal shaft and four sides perpendicular to it, with the Hebrew letters “n, g, h, sh” engraved on them — these letters stand for “nes gadól hayá sham” (a great miracle happened there).
