Using images from books, the artist Manoel da Marinheira dedicated himself to sculpting animals, one of which was the jaguar. This South American feline is a representative of the Panthera genus (which includes lions, leopards and tigers) on the American continent. In Brazil, the mammal can be found mainly in the Amazon and the Pantanal.

  • About Creator: Manuel Cavalcanti Almeida was born in Boca da Mata (AL), in 1917 and died in the same town in 2012. With his father, a saint maker, Manoel took da Marinheira a liking to woodworking and perfected his technique. While still an apprentice, he contributed to his father's production, but made toys for himself and later for his 15 children. According to Lélia Coelho Frota, it was the children's school books that inspired him to add species from other lands to the local fauna. “A veritable school of animalists was formed around him, as is often the case when a master appears in a popular milieu – that of his children and sons-in-law André, Severino, Antônio, Maria Cícera, Alexandre, Cícero, Zeca, Valdelon and at first Soço, who died prematurely”.
