The painting is a callback to a work by Pieter Bruegel the Elder, “The Tower of Babel”. Interestingly, the tower of Babel in Kazimierz is finished, which suggests the existence of a perfect space, integrating all residents and visitors in harmony. The upward-rising space is defined by the monastery wall. The middle part contains the most characteristic facilities in the town: the Celej tenement, the granary, wells, the Franciscan monastery. Small silhouettes of Franciscan monks occupy the centre; one of them is talking to geese, just like St Francis himself. Children at play and the arriving cart create an idyllic atmosphere that captures the impressions of young artists who came to Kazimierz. To them, it was a town of freedom and liberty.
Teresa Roszkowska created this painting in tempera.
