Dear Miss Horn:
Pressure of work has prevented my answering your letter sooner.
Inquiries that I made last winter about a show for Portinari showed me that the art market was too uncertain for dealers to be willing to import an artist and his work on the chance of sales.
Portinari’s coming here puts an entirely different aspect on the matter. Marie Sterner is particularly interested in holding an exhibition. She doesn’t know yet of his impending visit. I agree with you entirely that it would be best for Portinari to look the situation over himself before any definite arrangements are made.
Please let me know when he is due and in what ship. I am eager to see him. I will go to New York if it is possible at the time, and I want him very much to visit me here.
I visited the Fair in the first days of its opening and was not able to see the Brazilian building. I shall hope to go there on my next visit to New York.
It is a fine thing that FORTUNE is to reproduce Portinari’s work. He is a most distinguished artist.
Sincerely yours,
Rockwell Kent
