Made in South Africa I is a pastel drawing by the South African Artist David Koloane (1938-2019). The drawing shows five women carrying pots on their heads in a burning landscape. The work was done in a time of turmoil in South Africa, the first democratic elections were about to take place in the country but there were tensions between the Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) and the African National Congress (ANC). On 29 March 1994 the IFP marched on Shell House, the headquarters of the ANC. ANC securities open fired on the protesters killing 19 people, today called the Shell House massacre. This sparked battles between the two political parties, many of their supporters living in single neighbourhoods. Short Biography: David Nthubu Koloane was born in Alexandra Johannesburg in 1938. He studied under Bill Ainsley and later graduated with a Diploma in Museum Studies at the University of London. The artist also co-founded the Bag Factory Artists’ Studio with Sam Nhlengethwa in Johannesburg in 1991. The aim of the Bag Factory Artists’ Studio was mainly to provide studio space to black artists, who had little access to artistic resources. The Bag Factory Artists’ Studio is still active today. Koloane died in 2019 at age 81.
