A painting titled Opening of the Voortrekker Monument by South African artist Willem Hermanus Coetzer (1900-1983). The painting shows the Voortrekker Monument, an Afrikaner nationalist building, in the distance. The monument celebrates the Great Trek from 1836-1838. The monument was inaugurated in 1949 and this work celebrated the inauguration. Short Biography: Willem Hermanus Coetzer was born in Tarkastad in 1900, He studied in London at various institutions from 1928 to 1935. He became a renowned Afrikaner Nationalist painter, painting mostly scenes from the Great Trek, a historical movement of White pioneers, called the Voortrekkers who moved from todays Cape Province to Natal (1836-1838). The pinnacle of his work was the design of 15 historical tapestries for the Voortrekker Monument in Pretoria.
