In 1475, the convents of St Margaret and St Agnes in Strasbourg were reformed and merged. Their two patron saints can be seen in the historiated initial G (fol. 45r). At the bottom of the page, the Dominican nun Agnes von Mülheim is shown kneeling; she was prioress of the convent from 1511 until her death in 1521.
Sibylla von Bondorf, a nun from the order of St Clare, has been identified as the painter. Initially, she was a member of a convent in Freiburg im Breisgau, but around 1483/85, she joined the community of St Clare in Strasbourg, where she also took on commissions for other female convents.
In the 18th century, the manuscript belonged to the abbot of St Peter in the Black Forest. After the dissolution of that monastery in 1806, the codex was transferred to Bamberg by an unknown route.
