This panel comes from the Resurrection of the Holy Sepulchre altarpiece at the Canonesas del Santo Sepulcro Monastery in Zaragoza. It was commissioned by Brother Martín de Alpartil to be positioned in front of the tomb in the monastery's chapter house. This painting was located on the bottom row of the right-hand column and would have been part of an altarpiece comprising eight panels with three columns and three rows. The iconography is based on the apocryphal gospels narrating the Passion and Resurrection, and alludes to the testimonial of Simeon's sons who explain how they rose from the grave with Jesus and describe their entry in glory into hell. Jaime Sierra is considered to be the person who introduced the Sienese Italo-Gothic style.
