A watercolourist and cartoonist, born in Vilanova i la Geltrú in 1865. Joan Llaverias studied at the Escola de Belles Arts in Barcelona. In the early years of his professional life, Joan Llaverias mainly produced oil paintings. In 1885, he made his debut exhibiting at the Barcelona Watercolourists Centre, where he submitted his oil painting Moll de Barcelona (Barcelona Quay). Years later, in 1894, he took part in an official exhibition in Barcelona with the oil painting Egípcia (Egyptian). Later on, in 1896, he submitted the work Regates a vela (Sailing regatta). It was then that he gave up oil painting for watercolours, with which he mainly painted seascapes and landscapes. Joan Llaverias combined his painting with teaching, as he was a teacher of applied drawing in the field of women’s clothing at the Escuela Provincial de Corte. He became well known as an art teacher; one of his students was the illustrator Lola Anglada.

This painting is an example of the great skill, vivid colour and purity of technique that characterises his works. The subject of the study is a recurring one among seascape artists: fishing boats.
