Silver tetradrachm minted in Amphipolis, Macedonia, under Alexander the Great, c. 330 BCE. Price 4 (ANS 1944.100.26688, bequest of E. T. Newell). During his brief reign, Alexander produced a substantial number of coins in his name in mints from Macedonia to Mesopotamia. His coinage rapidly replaced Athenian ñowlsî as the standard international currency.
