The Austrian artist Franz Anton Maulbertsch was famous not only for frescos and altar paintings, but also for small forms. The character of St Florian is in line with the religious theme of representations that was dominant in the artist’s works. He was equipped with attributes appropriate for this saint: a fire fighter’s helmet and a bucket with water pouring out of it. The artist used subtle illumination that brings out the saint’s silhouette and pale colours. The light, shining from the upper left-hand corner, indicates his divine nature.
