Museu Marítim de Barcelona
Barcelona, Spain

Polychromatic figurehead representing the Archangel St Michael standing on the dragon. The saint is wearing a helmet decorated with feathers and has a sword in one hand and a large golden shield with a cross in the other.
St Michael represents the commander of the celestial army as an allegory of the naval forces.
In Spain in the 19th century, only the wealthiest shipbuilding companies were able to commission polychromatic figureheads. For many years this figurehead was the emblem of the Fishermen’s Association of Malgrat (Barcelona).
