A polychrome lithograph titled Still life with figurine by the German artist Max Pechstein (1881-1955). The work was donated to the University by the artist in 1935 when the University had an exhibition by Modern German artists. Short Biography: Hermann Max Pechstein was born in 1881 in Zwickau Germany. He studied at the Royal Art Academy in Dresden. He fought on the Western Front during the First World War (1914-1918) and became part of a radical Socialist group after the war. In 1922 he became a professor at the Berlin Academy and in 1933 he was banned from exhibiting in Germany by the Nazi's. At this stage he exhibited in other countries which included South Africa. After 1945 he was reinstated as a Professor He died in 1955 in West Berlin.
