In the small German-French border town of St. Germanshof (near the German town of Bobenthal and the French town of Weissenburg) 300 young people and students from various European nations met on August 6, 1950. They sawed up the border trees and posts and occupied the area. With posters stating "You are coming from Europe. You are staying in Europe," they called for the opening of borders and a united Europe. The demonstrators were looking for ways to dismantle the German barrier and procure wood for fire.
