Mayor Nikolaus Groß donated the panel, probably to mark the death of his first wife Anna. The motif of the Virgin and Child with her mother Anne, popular since the 13th century, has been given a typically Franconian rendering. The background landscape as well as the plant and animal studies are steeped in a long tradition which also influenced Duerer. His teacher Wolgemut, however, resorted not only to older forms in this panel. In the arrangement of the figures, he also responded to the accomplishments of his brilliant pupil.
