The steady development of the railroad network during the first half of the 19th century demanded more manageable luggage. Spacious bags with a lockable metal handle became fashionable and can be considered a predecessor of contemporary women’s handbags. The horizontally rectangular handled bag combines a basic form with ingenious feminine equipment: the outer material, a dark brown leather with punched trefoil forms and goldprinted gold accents, is underlain with red-green-beige striped ribbed silk. All seams are covered in a red-golden silk cord.
