Scene depicting an episode from history when the Spanish conquered Mexico in 1521. Guatimozin (1502–25), the last Aztec emperor, surrendered to Hernán Cortés (1485–1547) in the presence of both armies.
Carlos María Esquivel, son of the painter Antonio María Esquivel, was not as well recognized as his father. However, he did focus on historical painting, using the subjects and stylistic resources demanded by the prevailing taste of the time.
It is on deposit from the Prado Museum (Museo Nacional del Prado).
