The General Archive of the City of Rio de Janeiro (AGCRJ) is located in Cidade Nova, in the center of the city of Rio de Janeiro. It was initially conceived as the City Council Archives in 1567, at the time of the city's re-foundation. On August 5, 1893, its name was changed to the General Archives of the City Hall of the Federal District, becoming an autonomous body of the municipal executive. Today it is linked to the Municipal Secretariat of the Civil House of the city of Rio. Its mission is to collect, preserve and organize documentary collections produced by the municipal government, as well as private archives donated to its collection. It currently holds collections of documents from former mayors, administrators, teachers, engineers and other personalities from Rio.
