Penha Train Station

The scenes in the film record one of the longest-running celebrations in Rio de Janeiro, seen here between the 1920s and 1930s. We witness what appears to be the arrival of a family at the train station for the Penha Feast and their return home inside the wagon.

Legend has it that a miracle happened on the site of the church. Baltazar Abreu Cardoso, owner of the land and captain, was delivered from a snake attack after asking for protection from Our Lady. In gratitude, he instructed that a chapel be built on the cliff.

Sung about in music and intertwined with one another, the neighborhood and sanctuary became popular as a result of the feast. The creation of the train station in Penha helped to make the celebration one of the most beloved and attended in the city, second only to the Rio carnival.
