"Pai Chai Hakdang", the first modernized education institute in Korea, was established in 1885 by Henry Gerhart Appenzeller. In 1886, the Emperor Gojong issued a state edict of approbation of this place naming it "Pai Chai Hakdang". The east building of Pai Chai Hakdang was designated as a Monument No.16 from Seoul Metropolitan Government and opened its door to the public on July 24, 2008 as the Appenzeller Noble Memorial Museum where we can see the education, religion, politics, society and culture of the modern age of Korea.
