The University of Edinburgh was founded in 1582. It is the sixth oldest university in the English-speaking world and one of Scotland's ancient universities.
Today, the University is home to more than 40 000 students spread across five campuses. These campuses also house some of the world’s most important collections of art, musical instruments, archives, natural history, geology, anatomy, rare books, and manuscripts.
You can see the collections at the Anatomical Museum, Cockburn Geological Museum, St Cecilia’s Hall: Concert Room and Music Museum, and the Centre for Research Collections. The University also hosts a changing program of exhibitions and events across the city at the Edinburgh College of Art, Talbot Rice Gallery, and Main Library.
