Vogue

Vogue is Ballroom's highly stylized form of dance. Its origins reach back to the Harlem Ballroom culture, and its name is taken after the famous fashion magazine. There are currently three styles of vogue: Old Way (pre-1990); New Way (post-1990); and Vogue Fem (circa 1992).

Old Way Vogue and New Way Vogue

“Old Way”vogue was about hard angles and straight lines. But  “New Way” in the late 1980’s added elements like the catwalk, the duckwalk, spinning, bussey and enhanced hand performance. New Way also emphasizes rigid movements and “clicks."

Vogue Fem

Vogue Fem is distinguished by hand performance, spins and dips, catwalk, duckwalk, and floor performance.

“Vogue is how we resist the weight of an anti-Black and transphobic world. When we’re on the floor, we are weaponizing our bodies against those who fail or resist to see our humanity as Black trans people.”

Vogue is Dignity and Belonging

"Regardless of the style, voguing shows the courage of Black and Latino LGBTQ communities to make an art form that goes beyond creative expression. Vogue offers a sense of identity, belonging and dignity in a world that does not fully value their lives."
