SHADES IN DANCE - GVANIM BEMACHOL

By Suzanne Dellal Centre for Dance and Theatre

Bi-annual platform for emerging choreographers.

Established in 1986, Shades in Dance
is a bi-annual mentorship program that pairs young choreographers with a
professional artistic director to create a fully produced premiere that serve’s
as these artists’ debut into the Israeli dance scene. Many of today’s top
Israeli choreographers began their professional careers as part of this
project, including Barak Marshall, Inbal Pinto, Emanuel Gat, Liat Dror & Nir
Ben-Gal, Vertigo Dance Company, and many more.

Artistic Director: Idit Herman

The project took place between September 7-10, 2011.

Shades in Dance 2011 offers a wide range for new experimental daring creation. 16 creators with different disciplinary approaches, ranging from neo-classic to butoh and contemporary performance, each one in his own way searching bravely new ways of creation and movement, in the way that characterizes young daring artists. 16 creators were chosen in a process which included several creative workshops; at the end of the process their first idea was presented. During creative meetings, a strong mutual wish was expressed to burst the limits of style and language in order to redefine what is Israeli dance. With artistic guidance, there was an emphasize on the meaning alongside the movement language, as well as the design and the visual of each creation. The choreographers went through a guided path which included all the elements of the creation. The program was divided into several thematic evenings, so that the Program Aleph: Pure Dance highlights virtuoso movement in Gil Carlos Harush’s TAKANA, Smadar Goshen’s Urbania, and Sharon Vaisvaser’s 42 Inch.  audience were able to choose. Program Bet: Dream Big features work by four creators whom Herman described as “daring artists with chutzpah.” The program includes Idan Yoav’s Almost Human, Ran Ben Dror’s Agassi Pallas, Lee Meir’s Translation in the Body of the Text, and Yuval Goldstein’s Expensive Shit. Program Gimel: The Future is Now centers on work that Herman calls “futuristic dance” with refreshingly unfamiliar movement.  The bill is composed of Meytal Blanaru’s Aurora, Moran Yitzhaki Abergel’s Over me, and Lilach Livne’s Monday Larissa. Program Daled: Forbidden Fruit has been dubbed “sex, drugs and rock ‘n roll” by Herman and includes Yoni Soutchy’s Ben, Merav Cohen’s And When the Beast Returned, and Amit Zamir’s Buba(Doll). Program Hey: Rare Animal showcases artists who, according to Herman, “researched the physical border between human and animal” and boast “rare physical abilities, almost beyond human.”  The bill features Liron Ozeri’s Caravan, Ido Batash’s Bread and Circuses Blood, and Artour Astman’sFoosho.

Idit Herman (2011) by Idit HermanSuzanne Dellal Centre for Dance and Theatre

Performer, theater director and designer. Born in Tel – Aviv, Israel 1971.
Studied classical ballet and modern dance.
Between the years 1989 – 1991 she was a member of Batsheva Dance Company. In 1992 she traveled to Europe and worked with Choreographers and dance groups from The Netherlands and Belgium. Idit began creating in collaboration with Dmitry Tyulpanov in 1994.
The two established Clipa Theater in Tel - Aviv in 1995. Their partnership led to the emergence of a unique theatrical language, interweaving the arts of theatre, dance, design and music, that placed Clipa as the leading alternative theater group in Israel.
Idit directs and designs all the group's pieces.
The theatrical style, which has grown over the years to become synonymous with the group, is characterized by a totality encompassing each and every element of the performance. It entails absolute knowledge and command of all the elements of creation: movement, space, costume, set, sound, lighting and direction. In the group's work, these components are fundamental tools of expression alongside the performer's action on stage.

2013

Artistic Director: Idit Herman.

Rite and Ceremony in commemoration of 100 years to The Rite of Spring.

The project took place between August 28-31, 2013.

Six works by six young choreographers were chosen to present in this edition of Shades in Dance which focused in the primary relation between rite and dance. They chose to focus on rites and ceremonies, such as feminine rites, couple ceremonies, exile ceremony and commemoration rituals. This challenge brought the choreographers to expose themselves with personal matters alongside with ceremonial rules which are understandable and acceptable to each person; the place in which the stage becomes the reality with symbolic ritual meaning.
