Commodore Anson's voyage was indeed a human disaster. At war with Spain, England appointed Admiral Anson to lead a fleet of six ships to attack Spanish possessions in America.

The fleet touched down in Brazil and headed for Patagonia.
In the Strait of Magellan, Anson lost four of his ships and two-thirds of his men. However, he continued his Pacific route to the Philippines and Macau, made numerous captures, and returned laden with important booty.

Of the more than 2,000 men on board, only 188 returned. But his triumphant return to Britain on June 15, 1744, on the Centurion alone, with a booty of 400,000 pounds after capturing the Manila Galleon, the Nuestra Señora de Covadonga on July 1, 1743, earned him immense popular prestige.
