An artistic tour through Universitat Pompeu Fabra

UPF Art Track opened on 18 May 2016, International Museum Day, as part of the activities to celebrate UPF’s 25th anniversary. An original way of linking university, art and culture opening UPF’s artistic heritage to the public.

Untitled (1997) by Aurora AltisentUniversitat Pompeu Fabra. UPF Art Track

It is a stimulating tour of the most iconic buildings on the Ciutadella campus that will allow visitors to enjoy and experience first-hand the works created for the university by such internationally acclaimed contemporary artists as Jaume Plensa, Miquel Barceló, Susana Solano, Eduardo Chillida, Antonio Saura, Roy Lichtenstein, Frederic Amat, Josep Guinovart, Albert Ràfols-Casamada and Antoni Tàpies.

Reflection Room (1996) by Antoni TàpiesUniversitat Pompeu Fabra. UPF Art Track

One of the most singular spaces is Tàpies’s Reflection Room, the nerve centre of the tour and one of just two secular chapels of contemporary art.

The GalleryUniversitat Pompeu Fabra. UPF Art Track

The Gallery is Universitat Pompeu Fabra's painting collection that has been formed on the initial basis of the commissioning of commemorative posters for each academic year since its foundation in 1990. Following is a brief selection of works by some of the most prestigious authors of contemporary painting.

Tree of light (2007-2008) by PerejaumeUniversitat Pompeu Fabra. UPF Art Track

Perejaume original, as always. Mineral, or vegetable, or sidereal.

His interest in the landscapes has led him to contrast a geological and a cultural vision of nature.

Untitled (1994-1995) by Miquel BarcelóUniversitat Pompeu Fabra. UPF Art Track

Here, as so many times before, food is depicted, which, with the force of sculpture, seems to emerge from the painting.

In Barceló's painting, the pigments swallow and metabolize all: art and culture are nourishment, a vitamin supplement.

Perserverance (2016-2017) by Lita CabellutUniversitat Pompeu Fabra. UPF Art Track

According to the artist, she has chosen this image because "the character has determination, strength, and inspires intelligence and shyness". "Deep down there is a lot of movement, and that's what I think a university should represent," she says.

She declares herself a lover of Rembrandt, Goya, Ribera and Velázquez but in her work she also transcends the study of other great masters of painting such as Dürer, Rubens, Zurbarán, Van der Weyden, Rafael or Titian.

Flowers of knowledge (2014-2015) by Jaume MuxartUniversitat Pompeu Fabra. UPF Art Track

"Flowers of Knowledge", a display of the painter’s plastic and personal generosity, which seeks to arouse visual sensations around academic knowledge.

His gesture, between dramatic and decorative, always has a tone of rupture and protest.

Untitled (2017-2018) by Jaume PlensaUniversitat Pompeu Fabra. UPF Art Track

Father of androgynous creatures, Plensa now gifts us a child or a new-born, or who knows if -going even further back- a foetus...

In parallel to his impressive sculptural projects, he has developed work on paper, drawings and collages that pervert the dimensions.

Dipòsit de les Aigües (1880) by Josep Fontserè & Antoni Gaudí. Lluís Clotet & Ignacio Paricio (1999).Universitat Pompeu Fabra. UPF Art Track

The calculations for the spectacular building of the Dipòsit de les Aigües (water tower) by architect Fontserè were made by Antoni Gaudí and it reminds one of the Basilica Cistern of Istanbul.

The interior, in the shape of a hypostyle hall, has 100 pillars that form a labyrinth of arches 14 metres high, offering a visual game with the history of architecture.

Mercè Rodoreda 23 building (2008) by Juan Navarro BaldewegUniversitat Pompeu Fabra. UPF Art Track

The Mercè Rodoreda buildings and the Pasqual Maragall Foundation were designed by the famous architect Juan Navarro Baldeweg, winner of the 2014 Spanish National Architecture Award. These are his first projects in Barcelona.

Highlights of his work include the Woolsworth Centre at Princeton University (1997), the Altamira Museum (2001) and the installation for the Italy pavilion at the 9th Venice Biennale (2004).
