THE FRENCH WAVE BEGAN WITH PROHIBITION

Here you can find one of the best historical flyers : the first big rave party that never could happen ! It was to be held in Amiens, North of France, canceled by the police under the false pretext of the Tour de France passing through the city.

FG was a partner, of course!
It was Laurent Garnier and Coda magazine’s project, the first “pure player” in France. Both lost a lot of money with this cancellation...

A TOUCH OF POP TO THE HOUSE NATION

Michael Amzalag was the former graphic designer of the estimated magazine Les Inrockuptibles when he began to create the first House fanzine in France, eDEN, with Christophe Vix, Christophe Monier and many european crazy people living in Paris at the time...

He created the M/M Paris duo with Mathias Augustiniak, who is one of the most renowned graphic design collective in the world (Björk, Madonna, Givenchy, Loewe, Centre Pompidou to name some of their clients).

The First Big Garage (the most soulful House genre) in France with Tony Humphries’ first gigs (the magical resident DJ of Zanzibar club in NYC), David Morales, Robert Owens and Rhythm Doctor’s british team (Mama Records).

Le Pulp aka “the club for girls who like girls” had finally connected Paris with the international lesbian culture and was the place of the electro clash wave in the early 2000 with the revelation of artists like Jennifer Cardini, Ivan Smagghe, Scratch Massive or Chloé.

In 1996 Le Pulp offered lesbian, rock and electronic nights.

THE SEXY HOUSE OF NEW YORK

At this time, after the handbag UK wave, that generated handbag matches on some parisian dance floors, it was the turn of the New Yorker’s hard house.

Some of its best known figures in town were Johnny Vicious, the former A&R director of Salsoul Records. Sextoy wanted to play there; we wanted to dance to it and the party was gorgeous.

...and La Ménagerie, a party that brought in Paris some of the best italian DJs as Flavio Vecchi, Ricky and Montanari live from Riccione (Rimini).

Axel Huynh was Folies Pigalles’ art director. His work revolutionized the clubbing graphic style, he was also the photographer of a number of fashion magazines.

TRIBUTE TO THE GRAPHIC DESIGNERS

These graphic designers worked hard to add some magic to weekly flyers and posters that all these parties and clubs needed. A typical style based on the mix between glamorous retro & kitsch was reinvented night after night.

Some of the other graphic designers that helped develop the identity of the french night life were also M/M Paris, H5 Studio, Geneviève Gauckler, Vincent Bergerat (Respect Is Burning flyers) with the photos of Agnès Dahan.

TRIBUTE TO THE GRAPHIC DESIGNERS & ARTISTS

Paris wasn’t the “club kid’s” city as NYC, but some took the lead in their domain. The duo M&M’s worked for Coda Magazine and Radio FG for the photos, exhibitions or parties.

Alexandre Moggi aka “Moche” (ugly) was responsible with scenography of the launch party of FemininMasculin on the Centre Pompidou organized by FG. Olivier made a skin for the FG program. At the same time, Axel Huynh became a night influencer for many fashion brands.
