Introducing Volubilis

Volubilis is an ancient Roman city famed for its well-preserved ruins and beautiful mosaics. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of Morocco’s most popular tourist sites.

Where is Volubilis?

Nestled at the foothills of the Atlas Mountains, Volubilis is located near the modern town of Meknes in northern Morocco.

Mosaic Preservation

In 2022 the U.S. Embassy in Rabat announced a project with the support of the U.S. Ambassadors Fund for Cultural Preservation, to restore and preserve historic 2nd and 3rd century mosaics, inspired by Greco-Roman mythology.

The project will also train local artisans in the restoration and preservation of mosaics in order to build sustainable livelihoods in the region.

Sharing the Stories of Volubilis

In order to share the stories of the site and its community, a documentary film was produced as part of the U.S. Community Heritage Exchange Initiative, a collaboration between StoryCenter and the U.S. Department of State's Cultural Heritage Center.
