Abashiri Prison Museum

The Abashiri Prison Museum opened in 1983 as an outdoor museum where 25 historical buildings of the original Abashiri Prison are conserved and exhibited.

Wooden building designated as an important cultural property

Of the buildings relocated and restored from the original Abashiri Prison, eight have been designated as national important cultural properties, and six have been registered as registered tangible cultural properties.

The Futamigaoka Branch was established on hilly land in western Abashiri. Aiming planted, tended and harvested crops.

"House of deities and Buddhas."

This lecture hall was rebuilt in 1912 when the original buildings were restored. The prisoners worked harder on this building than on any other, putting their hearts and souls into constructing this, "house of deities and Buddhas."

History Theater "Red-clothed inmates in the Forest"

The Penology Museum presents and exhibits the lives and work of prisoners of that time. In the Sensory Theater, the excavation situation of the central road is narrated.

A museum where you can eat prisoner meals

Kangoku cafeteria offers "prison food" that reproduces the meals currently served at Abashiri Prison. Enjoy the meals!
