THE CALIFAS LEGACY PROJECT, the sixth book in the Hablamos Juntos Series, is a powerful dialogue between prominent Chicanx artists and budding storytellers.

We waited until the parents were there, and then we sang a song called ‘El Arrullamiento del Niño Dios’ as we rocked the baby Jesus on the blanket.

Holding the scorpion and feeding the animals was enjoyable. That was the first time they let me feed the animals, and it made me feel happy.

There it is again, the gorgeous statue of a woman who is surrounded by flowers that are red, orange, pink and yellow. There is a dove flying around her.

There were two girls and three boys. We named the boys Cubby, Stripers, and Endo. The girls were named Kira and Coco. They would lie in the big oak tree and hide under the porch. Now they are full grown cats.

Eran dos hembras y tres machos. A los chicos los llamamos Cubby, Stripers y Endo. Las chicas, Kira y Coco. Les gustaba descansar en el roble grande y esconderse bajo el porche. Ahora son gatos adultos.

The bench broke. I hit my head on a huge pink nail sticking out of the wall behind the bench. At first I thought there was water running down my back, but it wasn’t water; it was blood.

We got home, and nothing filled me except tears. I went to my room and closed the door. I heard the door creak; it was my mom. She sat down with me and hugged me. For some reason I felt sad and happy at the same time.

Later that day I was in the lake swimming. The bottom felt rocky. There were big redwood trees that touched the sky and white fluffy clouds above me. They looked like fluffy cotton balls.
