Narratives on life by Shoreline Middle School 6th graders, featuring artists of the Califas Legacy Project, a multi-year, multi-medium, collaborative

THE CALIFAS LEGACY PROJECT, the sixth book in the Hablamos Juntos Series, is a powerful dialogue between prominent Chicanx artists and budding storytellers.

The wonderful artwork by Guillermo Aranda, Carmen Leon, Amalia Mesa-Bains, Ralph D’Oliveira and Eduardo Carrillo, offers a window—and sometimes a mirror—for Latinx children to see themselves and the people they know.

The bench broke. I hit my head on a huge pink nail sticking out of the wall behind the bench. At first I thought there was water running down my back, but it wasn’t water; it was blood.

Museo Eduardo Carrillo and the Young Writers Program are proud to share our sixth book in the Hablamos Juntos Series: The Califas Legacy Project. We thank teacher Tracy Kumaishi for opening her zero period sixth grade class to us. The students worked with enthusiasm with the Young Writer Program mentors Paige Davis, Bonnie Ott and Julie Rodriguez.

Our goal is to open students eyes to the wealth of images by American Chicano/a/ Latinx artists and that these works have relevance to their lives. By writing, revising and finalizing their narratives the students share with us a view into their world for now and in the future.

Nuestro objetivo es abrir los ojos de los estudiantes a la riqueza de las imágenes de los artistas latinxs chicanoamericanos y que estas obras tengan relevancia en sus vidas. Al escribir, revisar y finalizar sus narraciones, los estudiantes comparten con nosotros una visión de su mundo para el presente y el futuro.
