However, by the late 20th century, Historic Jeddah's structures faced considerable disrepair, partly due to urban migration to modern areas. In 2014, recognizing its universal cultural value, UNESCO inscribed "Historic Jeddah, the Gate to Makkah" as a World Heritage Site.
