Pilgrims (2013)Original Source: Axencia Turismo de Galicia
Take the bare essentials in your backpacks and don't overpack. Each backpack is personal and based on individual requirements, but there are some things that shouldn't be forgotten:

Clothes
You shouldn't wear huge amounts of layers in winter. What's important is that your clothing is made of insulating materials, which maintain a fine layer of warm air between the clothes and your skin so that you don't lose any heat.

In summer you'll need to choose clothing that allows for perspiration. You should also include a waterproof garment, no matter what time of year you're completing the Camino.

Footwear
You're not going to forget your walking shoes, but you might not have thought about footwear for when you're taking a break—espadrilles, flip flops, or sneakers.
Boots (2021)Regional Government of Galicia
In terms of walking shoes, remember that it's a bad idea to use new gear for the first time on the Camino. Ideally, they should be broken in and used before the pilgrimage.
Hat (2021)Regional Government of Galicia
Headwear
Since you'll be exposed to direct sunlight for the majority of the stages, wearing a hat, sombrero, or sun visor is essential to avoid sunburn and heatstroke. In winter, a warm hat will protect you from the cold in places with very high altitudes.

Anti-chafing creams can be useful, but always try them out beforehand. If you're completing the Camino with other people, the smartest thing to do is share a first-aid kit and distribute the weight.

Self-care
We recommend taking a small first-aid kit which includes the basics: plasters, bandages, tweezers, and antiseptic solutions (like chlorhexidine). You can also carry any painkillers or anti-inflammatories you normally use.

Plus, don't forget to take a water bottle to stay hydrated while walking, high-SPF sunscreen, toilet paper, and tissues. One additional item that's a big help, especially on stony ground, is a stick, which is also a characteristic feature of the pilgrim.
Sleeping bag (2021)Regional Government of Galicia
Sleeping
A light sleeping bag is essential if we're going to sleep in hostels. Remember that it shouldn't get wet as this may be annoying at bedtime, so it should be protected inside our backpack. Earplugs may be helpful if you're a light (or not-so-light) sleeper.

Showering
In addition to shampoo, shower gel, a toothbrush and toothpaste, we recommend taking a microfiber towel with you. These are made of polyester and polyamide, don't weigh much and dry rapidly. You can find them at sporting goods stores.
Electric appliances (2021)Regional Government of Galicia
Capturing the moment
In these image-obsessed times, make sure you don't leave your cellphone at home. If you're taking a camera, it should be compact and light. With any device, it's crucial to remember to take the correct power supply. Also, if you're coming from abroad, don't forget to check if you need a travel adaptor.
Documentation (2021)Regional Government of Galicia
Identification (and payment)
It's important to take your documentation, including your health card, and carry credit or debit cards or a card wallet—carrying lots of cash is a big inconvenience. Don't forget your pilgrim badge, too.
Other objects (2021)Regional Government of Galicia
Other useful items
A swimsuit, a flashlight, sunglasses, a lighter, a utility knife, basic cookware, and a bar of soap for washing clothes. Tweezers and safety pins are also an option. But remember not to overload your backpack, or you'll regret it with every step you take.
You are all set!
