Journalist Lenita Miranda de Figueiredo, better known as Aunt Lenita, gets some young reporters ready for a photo on the roof of a new VW van belonging to Folhinha—the Folha de São Paulo newspaper's weekly children's supplement.

Designed by Aunt Lenita herself, it was launched on September 8, 1963, and helped popularize the main characters in Monica and Friends, a comic book series created by the cartoonist Maurício de Souza. The supplement ceased to exist in 2016, when it was given its own section in the newspaper.

Folha TV: 50 years of Folhinha

In 2013, a special program to mark Folhinha's 50th anniversary featured comments by its creator and first editor, Lenita Miranda de Figueiredo, or Aunt Lenita as she was known to many Brazilian children.

Girls playing with a skipping rope on Monsenhor Ignácio Gioia Street in São Luiz do Paraitinga, São Paulo State. The tourist town is famous for its carnival and the 19th-century buildings in its historic center.

In 2010, the town was devastated when heavy January rains caused the Paraitinga River to burst its banks. The flooding destroyed 200 buildings, including 36 in the old town.

Children have fun in Republic Square in downtown São Paulo. A report by the Folha de São Paulo newspaper discussed the possibility of extending the area, given the high demand for leisure space at the time.

In the 1950s, downtown São Paulo was shooting up vertically as almost 30,000 new apartments were built. This expansion was seen as a threat to the city's limited leisure spaces.

Children play soccer on a field at the headquarters of the Núcleo de Produção Comunitária Santa Clara, a community agricultural project in the city of Canto do Buriti, in the south of Piauí State.

The program, which was funded by private capital, allocated land to families and employed them to plant castor beans to supply the Canto do Buriti federal biodiesel project.
