A demonstrator throws an object at military police officers during a demonstration by health and education workers and students on Paulista Avenue, in downtown São Paulo. According to the Public Security Department (Secretaria da Segurança Pública), 33 civilians and 5 military police officers were injured in the confrontation.

2009: New Year

A demonstration in downtown São Paulo brings together around 300 street hawkers to protest against the City Hall (Prefeitura) carrying out inspections on 25 de Março Street. The City Hall took the step because longer shop opening hours in the run up to New Year were attracting an increasing number of street hawkers to the area.

2011: LGBTQIA+ Pride

Participants on the São Paulo's 15th LGBTQIA+ Pride parade—an event celebrating lesbian, gay, bisexual, transvestite, and transexual people (in the language of the time)—on Paulista Avenue in downtown São Paulo.

The event adopted a religious theme—Love Thy Neighbor: Enough of Homophobia—with a music truck (called a trio elétrico) carrying people from different religions along the parade route, including Catholics, Evangelicals, Anglicans, and members of the Brazilian Umbanda religion.

2013: Military intervention

Demonstrators call for military intervention during the March of Families with God for Freedom (Marcha da Família com Deus pela Liberdade), which attracted around 200,000 people in São Paulo.

It was a rerun of the 1964 demonstration of the same name, which helped bring about the military coup that overthrew President João Goulart that same year.

Demonstrators occupy the roof of the National Congress (Congresso Nacional) in Brasília during protests against the rising cost of public transport in the country. Demonstrators' demands also included an end to corruption and to spending on preparations for the World Cup in Brazil.

Demonstrators protest against President Dilma Rousseff's government and her Workers' Party (Partido dos Trabalhadores) on Paulista Avenue in São Paulo.

Months later, the then leader of the House of Representatives (Câmara dos Deputados), Eduardo Cunha, launched impeachment proceedings against the president, which would result in her being removed from office in August 2016.

The dummy was set alight by members of the Homeless Workers Movement (Movimento dos Trabalhadores Sem Teto).

2015: High-school students

Public school students from São Paulo's West Zone close the intersection between the Rebouças and Faria Lima avenues, in protest against the then education minister Herman Voorwald's plans to restructure primary and secondary schooling in the public sector.

Between October and December that year, thousands of high-school students occupied schools and roads across the entire state as part of one of the largest student mobilizations in Brazil's history.

Demonstrators take part in a protest calling for marijuana to be legalized in downtown São Paulo. The march started on Paulista Avenue and headed for Roosevelt Square. The rights to possess marijuana and use it for medicinal purposes were also on the demonstrators' list of demands.

A tribute to the councilor Marielle Franco, who was shot and killed in an ambush in downtown Rio de Janeiro on March 14, 2018, as she made her way home after taking part in a debate about Black women. Her driver, Anderson Gomes, was also killed in the attack.

They were protesting over the murder of João Alberto Silveira Freitas, a 40-year-old Black man who was beaten to death by two security guards from a Carrefour supermarket in Porto Alegre, in Rio Grande do Sul State, on the eve of Black Awareness Day (Dia da Consciência Negra).
