Capital of Japan has changed to Tokyo in the Meiji era. Kyoto lost its position as capital to proceed with the modernization policy in a wide range of fields. Appearance of the city have changed largely changed with the Western-style buidlings, but you can still see many traditional landscape of Japan on the other hand.

"Gion Festival is one of the festival that represents Kyoto, where floats called Yama (mountain) and Hoko (halberd) parades. There are various kinds of floats. Some carries dolls or companies, others are decorated with luxurious fabrics. There are also floats that carries people playing bells, whistels or drums. Highlight of the parade is the scene called tsuji-mawashi, where float diverts the turn at the intersection. "

"Many banks or post offices were built in Sanjodori to symbolize the modernization. Until now, some of those buildings are still being used as commercial or museum buildings with preserved facade (the front of the building) and renovated interior. Shushoin is a library that was established in Sanjo Higashinotōin by the Kyoto Prefecture in 1872."

"Kyoto Gyoen neighborhood"
"There were 200s of large and small mansions for the Nobility around the Kyoto Imperial Palace until the move of capital to Tokyo in early Meiji period. But the noble town went devastated rapidly since many of aristocrats moved to Tokyo along with the Emperor. Present Kyoto Gyoen was established through several times of renovation to renovate this area of noble mansions. During the royal visit, the party walked toward north on the Sakaimachi Gomon (gate) and went into Kyoto Imperial Palace trhough Kenrei gate."
