The military fortification was built during the 10th century under the orders of Mumadona Dias, who ruled the region after her husband's death around the year 950.
The goal was to protect the monks and nuns that lived in the monastery inside.

The place was a scenario for several families disputes for ownership of the county.
However, it was during the Battle of São Mamede (celebrated with the hoisted flag) that the county of Portugal conquered its independence with the victory of at that time Afonso Henriques.

The fortification passed through several renovations, however the current edification was built between the 13th and 14th centuries by King Denis.
It was between 1383 and 1433 that the two towers that flank the main entrance were ordered by King John I of Portugal.

After the 16th century, the castle lost its relevance and strategic importance because of the lack of a strategic military. From 1664/1666 onwards, its stone was used to build new places, which resulted in the demolition of some structures.

After it was classified as a National Monument in 1881, it was subjected to a thorough renovation.

The Castle was inaugurated on the 4th of June, 1940, at the Ceremony which marked the beginning of the Centenarian National Celebrations (1140-1640). Today, the Castle is included in the Guimarães Classified Area as “World Heritage” (2001).
