Hydrangea (2018) by Boonmee SangkhumArt Centre Silpakorn University
The physical aspects of plants and flowers in the nature are very distinctive. The way of conveying this physical beauty is a signature of Boonmee Sangkhum. The work emanates beauty and intricacy loaded with details.
This is achieved through the printmaking technique that is complex in terms of method and process.
There are many prints, with each one involving lots of processes that demand great skills and professionalism. The artist chooses the printmaking process of mezzotint, one of the intaglio family.
The printmaking process of mezzotint involves indenting the metal printing plate by a special metal tool across the surface. Each pit holds ink, and if printed at this process, the image would be solid black.
The burnisher is then used to polish pit holds where fainter tones are needed. This process will create light and shadow, similar to putting light on a dark surface, helping to create dimension and incorporate verisimilitude in the work.
The technique of mezzotint produces a solid black image, with certain areas highlighted by light, which become a focal point of the work.
The image looks mysterious and the solid black areas in the picture stimulate limitless imagination of audience.
The artist depicts realistically every minute detail of myriad hydrangeas and the delicacy of every petal of the flowers. The light and shadow of each flower are soft, emphasised by the technique and process that induce emotions and feelings.
Aside from verisimilitude, natural forms in the work emits the essence of beauty in the work. The artist compares beauty to an absolute truth, a truth hidden in beauty. The process of artistic creation involves contemplation with focus, mindfulness and intention.
Every printing work goes through lots of techniques and processes until it becomes a precious work of art.
Though the work does not communicate complex stories, it profoundly and distinctively conveys the essence of natural truths.
This artwork is a part of Silpakorn Art Collections, which are award-winning works from the National Exhibition of Art and Exhibition of Contemporary Art by Young Artists. They are under the care and the management of Art Centre Silpakorn University.
