The German Basket Museum combines the history of artisanal weaving, which has been included on the German UNESCO intangible cultural heritage list since 2016, and basketry with lively, modern crafts from today to form special exhibitions, demonstrations, and weaving courses for children.

A one-off exhibition of baskets from around the world showcases the craft from the smallest woven baskets made of fine willow strands, through to delicate, intricate pieces, to strollers and balloon baskets, and designer furniture made using a wide range of materials and techniques.

A collection of baskets, tools and catalogs of basket manufacturers were displayed at the school in Michelau from the 1928/29 school year for educational purposes. When the town hall was built in 1934, the collection moved in. The "Upper Franconian Basket Museum" was opened in three rooms of the town hall. One year later it was renamed the "Eastern March Basket Museum." The museum has borne its current name since 1936.
