Polar Music Prize

In 2005, Gil traveled to Stockholm, Sweden, to receive the Polar Music Prize from King Carl Gustav XVI. The Royal Swedish Academy of Music, which awards the prize, described Gil as "a unique composer powered by immense talent and curiosity."

Many More Awards

Gilberto Gil's political activism and the issues he raised in his songs led to him receiving awards that did not really have anything to do with his work as an artist. In some cases, they went far beyond music.

In 1981, São Paulo's City Council (Câmara Municipal) awarded him the city's highest award, the Anchieta Medal and Gratitude Diploma of the City of São Paulo. In 1990, he was made a Knight of the Order of Arts and Letters by the French Ministry of Culture.

In 1995, he was also named Commander of the Order of Rio Branco in Brasília, by federal decree.

In 1997, he was awarded the National Order of Merit in Paris. In 2003, as Minister of Culture, he was knighted in the Order of Prince Henry in Portugal; and was named Commander of the Order of Arts and Letters by France.

In 2005, President Jacques Chirac appointed him a Grand Officer of the Légion d'honneur (Grand Officer of the Honor Legion), the most important honor conceded by the French government.

Founded in 1802, the Order has graced few other Brazilian figures; the emperor Dom Pedro II, the former president Fernando Henrique Cardoso and the sociologist Giberto Freyre are among them.

A World Without Hunger

One of the stranger honors Gil has received was being made a Goodwill Ambassador for the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO). The singer received the honor in Rome, Italy, in 2001.

“The FAO's fight for a world without hunger for current and future generations is also my fight. It is a fight I have been engaged in for a long time, like many other Brazilians, like many other artists around the world...
