The Eagle and the Serpent: We Are no Longer the Same

The work of artisans from Huamantla, Tlaxcala, and made from corn cobs, grains and leaves, was inaugurated on the afternoon of Thursday, November 12 by the Secretary of Culture of Baja California at the Ensenada State Center for the Arts.

In a collaboration with the Museum of Popular Art, the Board of the Friends of the Popular Museum and the Association of Mexican Carpenters, the State Government, through the Secretariat of Culture of Baja California, consolidated the visit to the entity of artisans of Huamantla to exhibit, for the first time in the north of the country, the art of carpeting.

Carpeting is part of the national cultural heritage, which represents the people of Huamantla and all the carpenters who generously and with conviction keep alive the tradition that identifies and makes them proud.

Carpeting in Mexico arises from the perspective of the survival of a community. It is a current tradition in constant evolution, which is transformed according to the moment that society lives. Through a rug, the melting pot of visions that make up the culture of Mexico is expressed collectively, in the most sublime and beautiful way.

The rugs in Huamantla portray the moment that a community lives, so the concept of the eagle and the serpent is a gesture of encouragement and certainty in the current difficult moments that we are living as humanity; saying "We are no longer the same" is because we have lived a moment of evolution and adaptation, represented by the eagle that takes flight and seeks more positive horizons.

* In the greca or Mandala cornfields, pumpkin flowers and fauna such as butterflies, hummingbirds and frogs are represented. In this background we use gradient colors, starting in the center with warm tones such as yellow and orange; q transform to pink, violet and blue tones towards the outer part of the Mandala.
* The eagle is made with natural totomoxtle leaf, we choose leaves in white, beige, pink and purple tones (from natural corn from the region)
* The snake was made with dried corn stalk (chinamite) in its natural color.

Circular mandala that seeks to give a message of certainty, strength and unity in the face of the pandemic, where the eagle symbolizes the certainty and strength to take flight again, to get ahead.
