Forest Fire in Saskatchewan (2021-01-20) by landon parenteau, unsplashUN-REDD
We are seeing a new trend
An increasing frequency and intensity of uncontrolled fires. This is due to climate change, which is causing hotter temperatures, longer droughts, and drier vegetation, creating ideal conditions for wildfires to ignite and spread more easily and frequently.

We have come to realize something scary!
There is a mutually reinforcing cycle of climate change and wildfires. When forests burn, they release carbon dioxide, further contributing to climate change, which in turn fuels more wildfires.

Knock on effects
Deforestation harms biodiversity, displaces indigenous communities, and leaves the land susceptible to further degradation and erosion. It affects ecological services, human well-being and livelihoods, and national economies.

What is the solution?
We need the right approaches such as integrated fire management and investments in wildfire prevention.
Reforestation helps restore ecological balance, mitigate climate change, and increases resilience against future fires by enhancing the forest ecosystem.
