Lokaparo

‘Family Jewels: Indian Adornment Revealed’ is an effort to impart knowledge on the distinction of India’s precious jewellery, recognising many of its roots including tribal, agrarian, trade-based or royal in nature.

The Kasumala is made by stringing many identical coins together which overlap slightly. Some of these coins were part of trade, while some are specifically designed with special motifs of birds, prominent personalities like Queen Victoria or goddesses including Lakshmi.

The necklace is usually passed on to the daughter of the family as an heirloom. Lokaparo is quintessential to an assamese bridal trousseau. Today, it can be worn more casually, out of the bridal context.  

"The Juron ceremony takes place a day or two before the wedding. The groom's family (minus the groom) visit the bride's house and gift her jewellery and clothes. Lokaparo is one of the few traditional necklaces that is gifted."
