The changing market of leather puppets

Time has brought about changes in all aspects of people's lives. Popular culture and entertainment, even in rural parts of India, have seen an evolution in both form and content over time. Traditional shadow puppetry, as a vital medium for entertainment and dissemination of information, has lost its significance. Leather puppet artisans have had to reinvent themselves to retain relevance in this evolving context.

New interpretations

While traditional shadow puppetry no longer has much demand, puppets are bought by urban customers as decorative articles. Today, the artisans draw from their traditional vocabulary to make products that find decorative or functional use in urban homes. Wall decorations and narrative panels are gaining popularity. The nature of the medium lends itself to new functions: the translucent parchment with colourful perforated iconography makes for unique lampshades.

Finding new markets

The artisans had to step outside the familiar environment of their homes and villages in search of new markets. Craft bazaars, boutiques and emporiums have taken the place of the village performance tours. The puppets that are made are much smaller, for the purpose of decoration or souvenirs.
