Sierra Leonean textiles art
From dyed country cloth to palm-frond raffia, Sierra Leone boasts a vibrant textile heritage worn for various uses and for different occasions. These creations are deeply rooted in the culture and history of the indigenous people.
1. The art of country cloth
Made from locally spun cotton and plant dyes like kola nut, country cloth involves a complex dyeing process. Cotton strips are woven on a tripod loom and sewn together. This intricate textile is a testament to Sierra Leonean craftsmanship.
2. Gara
Gara is a product made through gara tie-dyeing from plant dyes garnished with starch. It is dominantly made of cotton which is prepared by starching and secured with cotton string after folding. Its multipurpose nature has produced a variety of fashionable wears.
3. Ronko
A popular local cloth in northern Sierra Leone, 'ronko' is Limba word for medicine hence the nickname Medicine Cloth. It is made of strips of country cloth dyed as reddish brown using local pigments of kola nuts, starch and water.
4. Raffia
A modern handcraft visible across Freetown, raffia products are made into bags, caps, shirts and shoes. Raffia is typically made from palm fronds or thatch of various species which are dried, stretched and sewn with cotton to make strips of raffia material.
