Rainbow Bay, Point Danger ca. 1894 (1894) by Poul C. PoulsenQUT Digital Collections
Rainbow Bay, Point Danger, Queensland, ca. 1894.
Many of the images taken in Brisbane and around Queensland in the album were taken by the well known Brisbane photographer Poul Poulsen.
Moreton Island, also known as Mulgumpin, is an island located on the eastern side of Moreton Bay in South East Queensland, Australia. It is situated in the Coral Sea on its east coast and is approximately 58 kilometers (36 miles) northeast of Brisbane, the capital of Queensland.
Moreton Island is known for its natural beauty and diverse range of activities. About 95% of the island is designated as a national park, making it a popular destination for nature enthusiasts.
The Brisbane River is a defining feature of the capital city of Queensland. In 1894 the river was very busy as the main port with many wharves and commercial shipping activities taking place. The Brisbane River now is a place for leisure, restaurant dining and general recreation.
Some of the most significant images in the album were the individual images that make up a panorama taken by John Watson. They show the very humble Brisbane city beginnings and the built environment in 1862. They were taken from Wickham Terrace, Brisbane. QUT Digital Collections has stitched the five 1862 images together to form the 1862 panorama.
The 1892 panorama presents an almost unrecognisable Bribane to the 1862 version. Prosperous economic times and a building boom in the 1880s had transformed the city's central business district and environs. All of these views were taken by Poul Poulsen from the old windmill/observatory on Wickham Terrace. The elevation and position of this convict built building provided the perfect vantage point for panoramic 1862 and 1892 photographs of Brisbane.
