Stone building, a rare feature
This image of a stone building was constructed during the colonial period. The tyranny of time has left only a few of its kind dotted on the cityscape. Maintenance of these buildings is very costly because of scarcity of materials and the required skills.
A batik-designed roadside market
This is a Batik work on a market scene by the side of the road on a major highway going out of or coming into the Western Rural Area. The items sold here are mainly fruits and vegetables with less congestion. It is not as jam-packed as with Freetown’s traditional marketplaces.
A rural activity
This art features one aspect of rice processing in rural Sierra Leone: shelling. Women would be seen going about this arduous task with unbelievable ease due to their skills, commitment and courage.
Plaiting with “Tik Comb”
The locally made comb known as "TIK" Comb was a very popular tool used by women for the beautification of their hair. The image of this comb in various designs was widespread in Africa. Currently, the mechanised Afro Comb originated from the tik comb.
