In some cultures, the cow has been considered a sacred animal since ancient times, even an object of worship that is prayed to for fertility, motherhood, and sound growth of children. This painting takes up this theme, depicting a woman praying that she will be able to give abundant milk to her child, soon to be born. The red hand-prints on the cow's body were inspired by the Indian custom in which left-hand prints are left as token of prayers. In this painting, however, the painter decided to use right-hand prints for his own artistic purposes.
