Bronze medal commemorating the Battle of the Nile, 1 August 1798/T. Wyon. Obverse: winged female, recumbent at foot of pyramid, holds a medallion with Nelson's bust, inscribed 'A . LD . NELSON.' in left hand. In her right hand a cross, with a skull on ground. Behind, a lion, harp and palm tree. Legend: 'VIRTUTE NIHIL OBSTAT & ARMIS' (Nothing withstands valour and arms). Exergue: 'VICTORY OF THE NILE AUGT . I . 1798.' Reverse: Leaning against an anchor, the Union shield, the Royal arms in centre, surrounded by laurel wreath. On a ribbon, which passes over both objects: 'NOV . 29 LAUS DEO1798.' The heavenly eye casts its rays over the group. Legend: 'SUB HOC SIGNO VINCES' (Under this sign thou shalt conquer).
